The high cost involved is not in the car itself but in the batteries on which they operate. They are not ‘low end’ cars. The batteries are expensive, and a pack will have to also be replaced every 3 to 4 years.
Another disadvantage is that the batteries need to be recharged. Advance planning is required as this takes time. Before taking a trip, the owner has to make a careful assessment of whether there is enough power stored in the batteries to take it that far. It’s not so much different with a gas powered car where the driver knows how far he can get with what’s left in the tank. But the advantage in gas is there are any number of gas stations where one can refill, and refilling takes only a few minutes. Recharging a set of batteries takes hours.
An electric car has limitations as far as distance is considered. If you are planning on long distance travel, it may not suit you. Most of them have limitations on how far one can go before getting the batteries recharged.
Lack of power is an added disadvantage. In interstate driving there are occasions where quick acceleration is required to merge into traffic. The electric car is at a disadvantage here.
Electric cars have come a long way but still need improvement before they are commercially viable and can replace the internal combustion engine.
