The electric car works on large batteries that hold an electric charge. These can be recharged at home or at standard charging stations simply by plugging into a socket.
As of now the single biggest drawback is the cost of the batteries that have a limited lifespan. Work is going on with Lithium ion batteries which are more compact and efficient, but cost is currently a problem.
Here are some advantages and disadvantages of the electric car:
Advantages:
- Produces zero emission hence no pollution or carcinogenic toxic gases.
- Give a quieter ride in comparison with regular gasoline or diesel cars.
- Hardly any moving pars so are far cheaper to maintain.
- Very little drop off in performance as compared with regular cars.
- More efficient essentially because no power is being used when the vehicle is stopped at traffic lights.
- Ideal in slow moving traffic where electric power usage is proportional to speed.
- Cheaper per mile running cost.
Disadvantages:
- Distance between charges is limited.
- At some stage there is an element of pollution. While the vehicle itself releases no emissions or pollutants, the electricity to re-charge the car comes from a plant that releases environmental pollutants.
- Because of charging restrictions can only be used as a city car or commuting vehicle.
A little appreciated drawback is that an electric car is only transferring the point of pollution and hence, its impact on the environment debatable.
