How To Test For Presence Of Ethanol ?
There are two reasons for conducting tests to ascertain the presence of ethanol. The first is ascertain the purity of fuel before using it in engines, as ethanol fuel is damaging to rubber and aluminum components of an engine. |

The second is to establish if a person is suffering from intoxication or ethanol toxicity. The procedure is as follows:
- Make a mark on a test tube about 2 inches from the bottom and fill it with the gasoline to be tested. Top the test tube with water, shake it and allow to stand. If the gasoline contains ethanol, the level of the water will rise, as ethanol is absorbed by water. This would prove the presence of ethanol in the gasoline.
- Ethanol (not mixed with gasoline) testing in humans has to be done by specially trained people. It may be required for medico-legal reasons such as an employer’s testing program, to know if an employee has alcohol in the system. Or it may be to ascertain if the alcohol levels in a driver are beyond the permissible limit.
The test entails samples of blood, urine and breath. Breath testing is the easiest and first to be conducted. It relies on the fag end of breath from deep in the lungs and refers to a conversion factor to determine the alcohol level in the blood.
To confirm the findings, blood and urine tests are conducted. Usually urine tests require two samples taken 20 to 30 minutes apart.
Sometimes urine tests are done at random to monitor people for the presence of alcohol.

Strategies To Reduce Ethanol Cost
Ethanol (which is also called ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol) is an alcohol-based alternative fuel that is blended with gasoline to produce a fuel with a higher octane rating and fewer harmful emissions than unblended gasoline. The US is the world’s largest producer of ethanol at 25 million cbms (cubic meters) in 2007, followed by Brazil with 20 million cbms. About 80 percent of the US production and imports is used as a fuel additive. More..
