There are two versions; the first has both the motor and engine working together augmenting each other. The other starts on the electric motor and switches to the gas engine when attaining a particular speed.
Running a hybrid car has many significant advantages. The government offers financial incentives by way of a tax subsidy. The running cost is substantially lower making it a more economically attractive proposition. Lastly, overall the hybrid car fewer greenhouse gas emissions and creates less carbon dioxide.
The improved efficiency is attained due to the subsequent reasons:
- The engines used in hybrid cars are smaller and more efficient.
- The hybrid car has a regenerative braking facility. While slowing down or braking, the motor switches to generator mode to recharge the batteries. It also creates a load that aids in slowing down reducing the need for braking. The momentum built up is hence well utilized and not entirely lost in braking.
- Frequent engine shut off. The car switches off automatically when stopped in traffic and starts again when the gear is engaged.
- Designed with advanced aerodynamics for drag reduction.
- Built with lightweight materials to reduce the load on the drive.
There is no compromise on safety standards with hybrid cars. They come with the same safety features as normal gas-driven cars. There is no necessity for additional features because of a dual power source.
