Instructions On How To Change Oil

If you want to change the oil in your vehicle yourself, make sure you follow the instructions on how to change oil to the T.

The first thing that you need to consider is a level surface. This will allow you to jack up your vehicle and insert the jack stands. The second thing to consider is all the tools you will need to change the oil. Keep them handy.

In order to change oil in your vehicle, you will need a ratchet wrench, oil filter wrench, oil drip pan and clean rags. Of course, it goes without saying that you cannot change the oil if you do not have a supply of new oil.

Here are the instructions on how to change oil in your vehicle:

Locate the oil drain plug. Place the oil drip pan under the plug before unscrewing it. After removing the plug, allow the oil to drain completely into your drip pan. Once all the oil is drained completely, replace the plug and tightened it as per the torque specified in your owner's manual. You will need a torque wrench for this. However, if you do not have a torque wrench, you can tighten the plug with your hands but make sure that you do not tighten it too much. The plug should be snug.

Now locate the oil filter drain plug. Before removing the plug with the help of an oil filter wrench, place the drip pan under the plug to catch the oil. Once the oil is removed, take the clean rag and clean the plug and the mouth of the filter. This is a good time to replace the oil filter.

Once you finish these two tasks, you are ready to fill the engine with oil. Check the owner's manual to see how much oil your engine needs. Fill the engine with three-fourths of that amount. The reason for this is very simple. Even though you have drained the oil, there will still be some that will not come out. So, you fill only three-fourths to account for the oil that does not drain out.

Check the dipstick to see the level of oil. If it has not reached the full mark, add a little more oil until it level reaches the full mark.
