A 1998 Toyota Corolla engine either comes with a manual transmission or an automatic transmission. An automatic transmission is the most sensitive part of the vehicle that gets damaged frequently and the repair is expensive. Apart from improper usage, an automatic transmission is also affected by the quality and condition of the transmission fluid. Hence, periodical examination of the transmission fluid is vital so as to ensure better life of an automatic transmission.
Checking the transmission fluid level and its condition is an easy process explained in detail in the repair manual of the 1998 Toyota Corolla. The car must be kept on a level surface and the parking brake should be engaged. Now the engine should be started and kept in running condition. The next step is to pull out the transmission dipstick and wipe it off with a clean lint free cloth. This dipstick should again be placed back into the location. The dipstick is removed again and the fluid level is measured.
Every dipstick contains two marks. One is “HOT” and the other is “COLD”. The fluid level would be within “COLD” mark if the vehicle is not in running condition. However, if the car is in running condition, the engine gets heated up, resulting in an expanded transmission fluid level that would be within “HOT” mark. Another important fact that should be considered while checking the transmission fluid level is the quality of the fluid. The normal color of a transmission fluid is red that comes as a clean, transparent liquid. The color of the fluid gradually turns brown after the car has commuted certain distance. This color then thickens into a black fluid that emits a burnt smell. This is the time to change the transmission fluid of your 1998 Toyota Corolla.
