The cylinder head on the right side is embossed with engine code, which is stamped at the assembly plant while assembling the car. The code is unique and consists of several digits that convey different messages. The digits stamped in the assembly plant has code in which the first digit denotes the assembly code, second and third denote the month of assembly, followed by 2 digits of month, 2 digits for the day of the month, 1 to 3 digits denote engine suffix code indicating the location, model and year of manufacture of your vehicle.
The engine suffix code is entirely unique and is not repeated that means all Chevrolet vehicles have different suffix code. The engine identification code is used to identify engine of Chevrolet cars which is not available in car chassis, in fact the code signifies the style of chassis for which the engine was meant to be installed. The other identification number you can find in Chevrolet cars is the block casting code that can help you to recognize a Chevrolet engine. The code is visible at the rear of the block inside the vehicle. The block casting code denotes the date of block casting; even the cylinder heads also denote the similar casting codes that tell when the block was cast. The heads in Chevrolet cars have head codes stamped on the top of the heads at centre. The head casting codes can be seen by removing the valve cover in most of the Chevrolet models.
