The Dodge Aries was Chrysler's first front wheel drive car to be used for domestic purposes, having a wheelbase of 100.1 inches. It was available in various styles like the 2-Door Coupe or the 4-Door Sedan or the 5-Door Wagon.
The Dodge Aries was the car that saved Chrysler from ultimate bankruptcy as these K-cars were guaranteed for the loans by the government. But they were hugely successful and widely popular, paving the path for a new generation of cars.
When Dodge Aries was started in 1981, the engine used was the 2.2L 84 hp I4 that was available either in a 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic. In 1982, there were not many changes, the major one being roll-down windows which were original fixed in the 81 model.
In 1983, however, additional 10 hp was added to the engine to 94 hp and in 86, the engine was changed to 2.5L I4 100 hp built by Chrysler themselves. In 1988, AM/FM stereo, along with power steering and brakes became standard which were previously optional.
Performance wise, the Dodge Aries had a light engine, but performed really well on the road, with handsome exteriors, well-designed interiors and a good gas mileage.
In its final year in 1989, the Dodge Aries’ station wagon model was discontinued. Eventually, Dodge Aries died away, but the K-cars still continued for more spin-offs.
