Worst NASCAR Wrecks Ever:
- During qualifying for April's Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, Michael McDowell slammed his Toyota Camry "Car of Tomorrow" (COT) into barrier near turn one. The resulting impact and tumbling was one of the most severe tests so far of both the COT and the new track walls. McDowell walked away.
- During the running of 1990's Budweiser 250 Busch Grand National, Waltrip's Pontiac Grand Prix rode up toward the outside wall in turn two. The car broke apart at every welded seam, but Waltrip walked off with nary a scratch.
- It happened again a dozen years later. While practicing for the August Busch Grand National in 2002, Harmon slid up the track just as Waltrip had. He, too, hit the retaining wall and shattered his car then was hit in the side by Johnny Sauter’s car. Harmon walked away unscathed.
- During a Sportsman race at Daytona International Speedway in 1960, NASCAR saw its largest single wreck ever. From a field of 68 cars, 37 were involved in a single multiple accident that wrote them off. Surprisingly the crash resulted in few injuries. 1960 was the year that NASCAR learned that safety at a super speedway like Daytona was a far more difficult problem than on the short tracks upon which most races were then still run.
- Easily the most traumatic event in NASCAR history was Earnhardt's death during the final lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001. Earnhardt’s black Chevrolet hit the wall at 160 mph killing him instantly. The horror of the accident introduced several safety reforms into NASCAR racing.
